There’s a cleanliness to white, a freshness, an ethereal quality. As artist Pierre Auguste-Renoir once said, “White does not exist in nature.” (For those of you who never took Art History in high school or college, Renoir was a French artist during the Impressionist period, which is the period that many of my favorite pieces of art come from!) Although there’s truly no such thing as a 100% pure white in nature, white is a color (or lack thereof) that remains a constant in fashion. No matter the medium, white gives off the perfect mixture of crispness and airiness. We see it in linens, satins, cottons, and more as it graces the runway in some shape or another each and every season.

When it comes to my closet, I have soooo many white and cream-toned sweaters, tops, dresses, etc. I can honestly say that 9 times out 10 when I’m out and about shopping I’ve found myself picking up at least one white sweater and seriously considering purchasing it before snapping myself back to reality and reminding myself how many I have already. That being said… my closet got to where it is for a reason… in large part due to this white-attraction of mine! I love the way that white clothing and accessories can balance out bright colors and blacks in a look while adding luminosity and pop of light.
Interior-design-wise, I absolutely LOVE white. Check out any of my Pinterest home boards and you’ll see a bunch of white marble countertops, light-filled entryways, white bedspreads, etc. I always love shooting photos and spending time at Restoration Hardware and 3 Arts Club Cafe in part because of all of the white they include in their showrooms. My dream house would be almost all white, with some gold and pastel accents thrown in here and there. Is this the most realistic idea in the world? Nope, but a girl can dream, right?!
Even though white ends up being a lot more stain-prone than darker colors, it’s still a fave because I love how I feel when I wear white. I feel put-together and refreshed!
For anyone who’s looking to do a bit of a wardrobe update or refresh in starting off the new year, I’d definitely suggest adding some new white pieces to your closet before settling on the go-to blacks for staple pieces. Don’t get me wrong, I basically live in my favorite black jeans, but adding some classic white pieces can really spruce up a wardrobe and update a look without getting too crazy or out-of-the-box.
