Living in Chicago, it’s crucial to have a variety of coats for the colder months. Temperatures jump all over the place and weather patterns have a tendency to be unpredictable! Some days it can be negative twenty degrees and then the next day it can be as warm as fifty degrees! I have a decent selection of coats that I wear between mid-October and early April, but my J.Crew Cocoon Coat is by far my favorite!
The Cocoon Coat is a cult classic in the preppy realm of the fashion industry. Almost every year it sells out in the most popular sizes and colors in a blink of an eye! I’ve been wanting to purchase one for a while, but my size or the color I wanted was always sold out before I could add it to my cart. This year, I was able to snag mine from my local J.Crew the day they put them on the floor and I got it while they were doing 30% off of the store! (So basically it was fate.) I got my coat in “heather dusk” and right now it’s on sale for 35% off and available in almost every size! They also have the black and sandstone available in a few sizes and they’re on sale as well!
I’ve worn this coat SO much since purchasing it in October and I brought it with me when I traveled to Banff in Alberta, Canada this fall! It’s the perfect fit and weight for layering pieces under it, but it also works well on it’s own on the warmer days. With going in and out of the mountains and dealing with varying altitudes the temperatures were constantly changing. I wore everything from a long sleeved t-shirt to a puffer vest underneath and it worked perfectly!

This coat has so many great details to it!
– I love that the zipper isn’t exposed when it’s zipped up.
– The soft, satin-like lining is a great finishing detail that makes the coat feel luxe.
– The internal pocket is perfect for keeping your valuables close.
– The three exterior pockets hold a bunch!
– The external pocket flaps can be left exposed or tucked in help to switch up the look! (Shown below.)
If you’re looking for a similar, but less expensive alternative, J.Crew Factory has the City Coat which comes in five different colors, is just a bit shorter than the Cocoon Coat, and is under $170! I personally like it best in “smoky wisteria” color!
