I hope that you’re all having a great month so far! It’s time to share my May ’19 Playlist! There are a few songs this time around that really stand out for me on this playlist.
“SOS” by Avicii and Aloe Blacc is one of my favorites that I included. It was released recently, even though Avicii passed away a little over a year ago. This was a song that was in process prior to his death and is the first of multiple that will be released posthumously on an LP in June. Personally, I have a strong association with Avicii’s music and fun, summertime memories. There are certain songs of his that will play and immediately take me back to a specific place in time or memory. I was honestly pretty upset about his passing.
Avicii was the first artist death in my lifetime that really hit home. His music has been part of my life in the last few years. It’s such a treat to have a few more songs from him coming out as this summer rolls around. I know that I’ll appreciate these songs even more since I know that there will only be so many more that can be released.
One of the other songs that deserves a special shoutout this month is “Hold Your Head Up High” by Darlingside. I recently saw them live at the Old Town School of Folk Music with my family and they were incredible! This song in particular was featured recently on “This Is Us,” which is also pretty cool! I first learned about Darlingside from my mom, since she and my aunt “discovered” them while attending a music festival a few years ago in the Pacific Northwest. My mom bought our whole family tickets when she found out they’d be in Chicago because she liked them so much!
A lot of groups sound very different on recordings vs. live, but these guys did not disappoint! The show wasn’t a huge production by any means – that’s not what brought the “wow” value here. Darlingside has an incredibly melodic and ambient sound that can give you chills (in a good way) at times. Their harmonies are amazing and it’s crazy to see how many instruments they play as a group. I loved this song live as well as “Extralife” and “White Horses.” Highly recommend checking them out!
I hope that you enjoy this month’s playlist! Let me know which song is your favorite this time around.
