When it comes to seasons and weather, Chicago can be pretty fickle. Today I’m sharing 5 different types of coats & jackets that I suggest owning if you live in Chicago. (Or really anywhere with regularly fluctuating temperatures!)
1. Wool Coat
I think that owning a polished, wool coat is a MUST! My go-to coat 9 out of 10 times during the fall winter months is my cocoon coat from J.Crew. (I just wore it today!) I think that a peacoat, dress coat, cocoon coat, or something along these lines is a great wardrobe staple and investment.

2. Heavy Winter Coat
Chicago isn’t called Chiberia in the winter for nothing! Between the windchill and below-freezing temps, a heavy winter coat is so necessary! I think that one of the important factors to take into account when shopping for a winter coat is not only warmth, but water resistance. Chicago snow can be pretty wet at times. (I swear it sleets so much here!) So, when purchasing a winter coat I recommend something on the heavier side and either water proof or very water resistant. Until recently, I almost always got my winter coats from L.L.Bean and Lands’ End. I still have one from Lands’ End that I LOVE, but have also branched out to other brands in recent years. For example, Laundry By Shelli Segal.

3. Lightweight Puffer/Down Coat
I’m a more recent convert to the lightweight puffer fan club. Coats like this are great for days when you’re running around, bopping in and out of places and don’t want to get overheated. Honestly, a lightweight puffer is the ideal coat for when you’re doing your holiday shopping! The lightweight factor makes them easy to take off and carry when inside, but they still provide ample warmth when you’re outside! The one thing that I will say about coats like this is that they typically don’t have much in the way of wind blockage. So, if you’re going to wear one of these, do it on a not-so-blustery day!

4. Leather or Faux Leather Moto Jacket
I LOVE a good moto jacket! I personally have moto jackets in tan, black and white. This sort of jacket is great for transitional months, think warmer March-May and cooler September-November. However, they can also work well underneath a lighter-weight winter jacket as part of your outfit during the colder months. In my opinion, a moto jacket automatically elevates even the simplest of looks! The ones that I own are from Forever 21, Topshop and BB Dakota.

5. Denim Jacket
Last but certainly not least, a classic. The denim jacket. Jean jackets are great for all year round because they look cute over a sundress but also layer wonderfully over sweaters and hoodies! I love and own this classic style denim jacket by Levis as well as this slightly more cropped jean jacket by Madewell.
